Reflecting on what brings you joy and meaning is a powerful way to gain clarity about your purpose and priorities, set some time aside. Start with 20 minutes (if your life is too busy at the moment, start with a smaller amount of time).
No interruptions, no distractions, just you and your thoughts. Here’s a simple, step-by-step approach to help you dive deep into understanding what truly lights you up:
1. Create a Quiet Space
Find a calm, comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed. Turn off distractions and give yourself permission to slow down. Put the phone on silent or turn it off. 😉
2. Ask Yourself Deep Questions
Write down your answers to questions like:
When do I feel happiest or most alive during the day or week?
What activities or moments make time fly for me?
What am I proud of accomplishing so far?
What values do I hold dear? (e.g., kindness, freedom, creativity)
When have I felt the most fulfilled or content?
Who or what inspires me?
If money and time were no issue, what would I spend my days doing?
3. Recall Past Joyful Moments
Think back over your life:
What experiences brought you the greatest happiness?
Are there patterns or common themes in those moments?
What hobbies, relationships, or achievements stand out?
4. Notice What Drains You
Identifying what doesn’t bring you joy is just as important:
What activities or situations leave you feeling exhausted or unhappy?
What do you want less of in your life?
5. Try a “Joy Journal”
For a week or two, jot down daily:
One thing that made you happy or gave you energy.
One thing that felt meaningful or satisfying.
How you felt during and after those moments.
Look for patterns or repeated themes.
6. Explore New Things
Sometimes you discover joy by trying new activities:
Take a class.
Volunteer somewhere different.
Spend time in new social groups or places.
Notice what excites you or sparks curiosity.
7. Get Feedback
Ask close friends or family:
When have they seen you happiest or most “yourself”?
What strengths or qualities do they admire in you?
8. Reflect & Summarize
After gathering insights, write a summary of:
What activities or values bring you the most joy.
What meaning or purpose you want to focus on moving forward.
